Harley-Davidson says it has settled on four sites where it might move production away from its York, Pa., assembly plant.

None of the sites are in Wisconsin and none of the work would be moved here, a Harley spokesman said Friday.

Harley is considering Kansas City, Mo.; Shelbyville, Ky.; Shelbyville, Ind.; and Murfreesboro, Tenn. Keeping the work in York is also a possibility.

Harley said in May that it was planning a major restructuring at its operations in York, including possibly moving them to another location in the U.S.

The York operations are not competitive or sustainable long-term as they are currently structured, said company spokesman Bob Klein.

Earlier this year, Harley announced a shakeup of its manufacturing that included hundreds of job cuts. The company is closing its Capitol Drive plant in Wauwatosa in 2010.

Klein said the plans for metro Milwaukee operations haven't changed.

The York facility is Harley's largest plant and produces Touring and Softail motorcycles.

Harley also says work rules and job classifications at the facility limit its ability to be competitive. "There's a need for much greater flexibility in the work we do there," Klein said.
