TAMPA—A maintenance worker was killed and another was injured early Friday after an automated lift machine fell 20 feet onto them at a Tampa warehouse, officials said. The machine was undergoing maintenance when it fell at about 1 a.m. at the Pepsi bottling ware-house, 11315 N. 30th St., according to Tampa Fire Rescue. Inside the warehouse at about 1:20 a.m., rescuers found one man dead under the machine. The other man had serious leg injuries and was taken to Tampa General Hospital. The men, reportedly from Pennsylvania, worked for a company contracted to maintain the system, Tampa Fire Rescue said. The warehouse is at least 100 feet tall and full of racks with pallets of Pepsi products, officials said. The machine, an automated storage and retrieval system, is used to move pallets of products. Typically, people are not in the area where the equipment is operating. After the crash, firefighters used heavy rescue equipment to move the machine off the victim's body. Police were investigating and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified, officials said. The workers' identities weren't released.
