One dead, two others injured in accident on Alligator Alley FHP says pickup rear-ended SUV west of intersection with U.S. 27 By Joe Cavaretta staff writer One person died and two others were injured early Wednesday after an accident along Interstate 75 in western Broward County according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The accident happened about 2 a.m. near Mile Marker 31 on Alligator Alley, several miles west of the highway's intersection with U.S. 27. According to FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky. a Toyota 4Runner and Dodge pickup truck were both traveling west when, for an unknown reason, the pickup rear-ended the 4Runner. sending it off the road. The Toyota driver, Harry Dontfraid, 51, of North Fort Myers, lost control as the vehicle rolled along a grass shoulder, through a fence and into the canal. Dontfraid and his male passenger were able to get out of the vehicle. "However, one of them evidently couldn't swim and he didn't make it," Wysocky said. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, but his name isn't being released until relatives are notified. Dontfraid and the driver of the pickup truck, Bartley Joseph Jude Gorman, 19, of Auburndale. were taken to Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Weston with minor injuries. The cause of the accident remains under investigation and charges, if any. are pending. Sun Sentinel Broward County
