"5 injured in crash on U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor"

PALM HARBOR — Five people were seriously injured in an accident on U.S. 19 just north of Alderman Road Tuesday morning.
Witnesses and authorities said that about 10:15 a.m., a Pontiac GTO traveling north on U.S. 19 at a high rate of speed collided with a Toyota Highlander turning north onto U.S. 19 from Colonial Boulevard.
After the collision, the Pontiac careened into a utility pole, knocking it down across several lanes of U.S. 19.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Evan Nicholas Andropoulos, 28, of Tarpon Springs, was driving the Pontiac. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa by ambulance.
His two passengers, Gavin Clarkson, 28, of Palm Harbor and Jennifer Daly, 28, of Tampa, were flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
Sylvia Benedetti of Endicott, N.Y., 67, was driving the Toyota. An ambulance took her to Bayfront. Her passenger, John Little, 68, of Palm Harbor, was flown to Bayfront.
The conditions of the injured were not immediately available.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 19 were closed between Alderman Road and Innisbrook Drive for more than an hour. Troopers are continuing their investigation. Charges are pending.
