"Pedestrian hit, killed in Lakeland"

A pedestrian was hit and killed Tuesday night while crossing a Lakeland road.

According to reports, Wayne Lester Hile, 54, was walking along Duff Road shortly after 7 p.m., when for unknown reasons, he left the shoulder of the road and walked into the eastbound lane of Duff Road.

At the same time, Tonya D. Young, 36, was driving a 1996 Nissan Maxima east on Duff Road toward the intersection with Paradise Cove Place, deputies said.

As Hile was crossing, the Maxima hit him, deputies said. He then fell to the ground near the double yellow-lane dividers.

Young waited at the scene for emergency crews, who declared Hile dead at the scene, the report said.

Investigators said the location of the crash was poorly lit, with no artificial lights, and that Hile was wearing dark clothing. They said it also appears as though Hile violated Young's right-of-way.

The investigation continues.
