MANATEE -- The 5-year-old victim of a hit-and-run over the weekend was in stable condition Sunday in a St. Petersburg hospital while he suspect was behind bars at the Manatee County Jail.
“The young boy is in All-Children’s Hospital and he is stable with a broken leg,” Lt. William Fowler of the Bradenton Police Department said Sunday. “The driver of the pick-up truck that hit him turned himself in.”
At 3 p.m. Sunday, police arrested Lionso Martinez-Vera, 25, and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injuries, reckless driving and having no valid driver’s license, Fowler said. He was being held on bonds totaling $7,000.
Police were investigating in a neighborhood not far from the hit-and-run site when Martinez-Vera walked up and surrendered himself, Fowler said.
“He had no explanation for the hit-and-run and, during his interview with police, he invoked his right not to speak,” Fowler added.
Martinez-Vera is accused of striking the boy in the 500 block of 22nd Street East in Manatee County about 7:30 p.m. Saturday and then fleeing, Fowler said.
Fowler was not sure what type of sentence the charges could bring if Martinez-Vera is convicted.
“These are serious charges, but each case is different,” said Fowler, who also did not know when Martinez-Vera will make his first appearance before a judge.
The investigation is ongoing as to how fast Martinez-Vera was going and where the boy was at the time of the crash.
“The boy was riding his bike in the road when the pickup heading southbound on 22nd Street hit him,” Fowler added.
